The 5 Best Things About Colwood

Updated: Sep 14, 2023

A Quick Overview

Colwood is a beautiful neighborhood located just outside of Victoria BC. The area is known for its stunning natural scenery, mild climate, and friendly people. Here are five of the best things about living in Colwood:

1. Esquimalt Lagoon

This lagoon is a protected bird sanctuary that is home to over 200 species of birds. It is a beautiful place to go for a walk or a picnic, and it is also a popular spot for bird watching. The Lagoon is protected by a long sandbar lined with beaches and a road connecting each end. It’s a great location for a beach day with friends, or to watch fireworks on special holidays like Canada or Victoria Day. In addition to Esquimalt Lagoon, Colwood is also near Witty’s Lagoon and Albert Head Lagoon, two other popular beach side locations.

2. Fort Rod Hill

This fort was built in the early 1900s and is now a National Historic Site. It offers stunning views of the city and the surrounding mountains. Plenty of history to explore including old bunkers, artillery pieces, and storage buildings on display for all ages. The fort was originally built to Defend the Esquimalt Naval base against foreign invaders who might attempt to attack Canada’s Pacific Naval fleet by way of the Strait of Juan De Fuca. The fort, along with nearby hillside radar and battery placements were of particular strategic importance during the Second World War and the battle for the Pacific.

3. Hatley Castle

This castle is a National Historic Site that was built in 1908. It is open to the public for tours, and it is also the site of a number of annual public events including public art markets, and other events. If Hatley Castle sounds familiar it might be because it is more famously known as the setting and shooting location for the X-Men movies, and less commonly known as Luthor Mansion in the Superman origin series Smallville. Last but not least, Hatley Castle is also the home of Royal Roads University. A convenient post secondary option for your kids or your own continued learning.

4. Golfing

Colwood is close to a number of golf courses, and home to the Royal Colwood Golf Club, which is the oldest golf course in British Columbia. It’s also home to Juan De Fuca Golf Course. Both are fantastic options for avid golfers which are only minutes away. Colwood is also next door to a few other popular golf courses in Metchosin including Olympic View Golf Club, Metchosin Golf & Country Club, and Green Acres Par 3 Driving Range.

5. Parks and Recreation

Obviously like many neighborhoods in and around Victoria there are lots of great hiking and biking trails. Living in Colwood specifically puts you close to a few local favorites including Mill Hill Regional Park and Goldstream park. You’re also much closer to East Sooke Park, and Sooke Potholes, a popular Summer swimming destination. Colwood is also close to some more adventurous activities including camping, kayaking, horseback riding, indoor rock climbing, paintball courses, and more.

These are just a few of the best things about living in Colwood. If you are looking for a beautiful, friendly, and scenic place to call home, then Colwood is the perfect choice.
