4. The History
Oak Bay has a fascinating history, with ties to some of the most important events in Canadian history. It is the ancestral home for indigenous peoples who camped and lived at the tidewater sites for many centuries. The early European settlers arrived in Victoria around the late 1700's and eventually established Fort Victoria in 1843. At this time the Hudson's Bay Company had control of most of the lands that make up Oak Bay today. Some of the stately homes in and around Oak Bay were originally built and owned by 19th century railway, lumber, and mining magnates of the age.
